Team USA’s Road to LA28

The U.S. has a host-country place in each Olympic event. The team that takes those places is still to come—and its selection process is not yet approved.

The status, at a glance

Known now / still to be announced

As of October 20, 2026

Known now

  • One U.S. host-country quota per gender; maximum team size is 10 athletes per gender.
  • Host quota is subject to ongoing participation in the 2027 continental championships.
  • USA Football’s April 6, 2026 preliminary notice anticipates evaluation across 2026–28 activities.
  • USA Football is the U.S. National Governing Body and says it selects, trains, and leads Team USA Football.

Still to be announced

  • The final LA28 roster—no individual athletes have been announced.
  • Approved 2028 athlete-selection procedures; USA Football says these will be released after USOPC approval.
  • Final eligibility and safety criteria, plus dates and details for future evaluation activities.
  • Olympic team-place qualification names countries, not individual athletes; NOCs have exclusive authority over representation.

Important distinction: USA Football’s general national-team pathway is not the approved LA28 Olympic selection procedure. Its preliminary notice explicitly complements—not substitutes for—the procedures still to come.

USA Football’s published pathway offers context for how national-team opportunities can work. It is not a promise of an LA28 invitation, nor a substitute for the approved Olympic selection procedures.
